Volunteer Position | Remote
Role Description: Legal Counsel (Africa Expansion & Project Support)
As Legal Counsel, you will play a strategic role in African Power’s expansion across the continent. You will advise the organization on all legal aspects related to establishing activities in Africa while ensuring the legal viability and compliance of projects supported by the African Power Awards and other programs.
Your Key Responsibilities:
1. Strategic Expansion in Africa:
Advise on legal frameworks for establishing African Power in various African countries (local structures, partnerships, etc.).
Analyze legal and regulatory environments (Association Law, Tax Law, NGO regulations) in target jurisdictions.
Identify legal and administrative obligations required to operate locally.
Support registration processes and local compliance efforts.
Recommend optimal legal structures based on specific national contexts.
2. Project Support & Advisory:
Evaluate the legal viability of projects applying for the African Power Awards.
Verify project compliance with local regulations (licenses, permits, sector-specific standards).
Advise project leads on legal matters (legal form, contracts, intellectual property).
Identify legal risks and propose mitigation strategies.
Assist in the legal structuring of winning projects.
3. Compliance & Risk Management:
Ensure all supported projects adhere to applicable national and international laws.
Draft and review legal documents (Partnership Agreements, MOUs, etc.).
Monitor compliance with sectoral regulations (Fintech, Health, Education, Agriculture, etc.).
Advise on tax and customs implications for cross-border projects.
Note: This is a volunteer position. It offers a unique opportunity to gain expertise in African Business Law and directly contribute to high-impact projects on the continent.
Candidate Profile
Core Competencies:
African Law: Knowledge of at least one African legal system (OHADA, African Common Law, or specific national law).
Business Law: Proficiency in Corporate Law, Contract Law, and Taxation.
Legal Analysis: Ability to navigate complex regulatory frameworks and identify risks/opportunities.
Strategic Advisory: Talent for translating legal issues into clear, actionable operational recommendations.
Additional Assets:
Law degree (Master’s, LLM) specializing in Business, International, or African Law.
Professional experience in a law firm, corporate legal department, or international organization operating in Africa.
Multilingualism (French and English are essential; an African language is a plus).
Experience supporting startups or entrepreneurial ventures in sectors like Fintech, Agritech, or Healthtech.
Personal Qualities:
Rigor and precision in legal analysis.
Ability to simplify complex legal concepts for non-experts.
Proactive mindset with the ability to anticipate legal challenges.
Strong ethics and a commitment to African development.
